How to Build the Best Vegan Tacos (no recipe!)
Tacos are one of the easiest and most delicious meals to throw together on the fly. There's 4 main things to keep in mind when building your own tacos without a recipe:
- Hearty taco filling or base: There's no meat in a vegan/vegetable taco so in place of it include something that feels substantial when you bite into it ie. roasted or grilled veggies, some protein, and a grain. Some popular choices are baked tofu, crispy tofu, crumbled tempeh, crispy lentils, walnuts, black beans or chickpeas, crispy quinoa, roasted cauliflower, roasted sweet potatoes or crispy air fryer potatoes. Choose your favorite ingredients and then season them with taco spices to add flavor!
- Taco topping ideas: The toppings should complement and contrast the taco filling. Something fresh, creamy, tangy, crunchy, spicy or chunky. Here's just some of our favorite taco toppings: pico, avocado or guacamole, mango corn salsa, diced tomatoes, pickled onions, sliced or pickled jalapenos, creamy coleslaw, shredded lettuce, cilantro, sprouts, and cheese.
- Dipping sauces for tacos: A drizzle or dipping sauce can magically transform a boring taco into something addictive. Here's some of our favorite sauces for tacos: creamy chipotle sauce, cilantro lime dressing, Tex Mex cashew cream and of course, your favorite hot sauce like sriracha, Valentina, etc.
- What kind of taco shell is best?: For soft tacos use a corn tortilla (gluten-free), flour tortilla or a combo corn and flour tortilla. We like tortilla tacos best when warmed on the griddle with a bit of char. If you can't resist the crunch of a hard taco shell, warm them in the oven or toaster oven before serving.
- Seasoning: Homemade taco seasoning is quick, easy, cheap, and delicious to make from scratch. Highly recommend!
Highly recommend setting up a taco bar so everyone can serve themselves. We love taco night with a round of margaritas and beer. Enjoy!
